Tis the season once again.
At Public Allies this time of year gets especially difficult for out of state
Allies. The work they do varies in difficulty but the experience of being a
Public Ally unites them to one another almost like family. So celebrating a
holiday potluck to many is the equivalent of a Thanksgiving dinner with family.
I don’t know if any of my previous posts have done justice to illustrating the
great work Allies do but to put it in perspective, Allies usually work 43-50 hours
a week in various nonprofits around the valley from homeless shelters to
museums and health clinics. On the day of the potluck, I couldn’t help but to
appreciate the rare and amazing feel of community radiating from the
individuals in the room. People from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and
identities all coming together to share a meal together and celebrate their
work and community. This to me is the epitome of thanksgiving, and I give
thanks to this community who has so openly welcomed me into theirs.
